14 DAY TRIAL // Microsoft rolled out a new Windows 10 cumulative update yesterday for users who are enrolled in the Release Preview ring of the Windows Insider program, but the company didn’t offer a change log to let us know what exactly was fixed in this release.
This information, however, was posted a few minutes ago in the Feedback Hub and reveals that, in addition to pushing Windows 10 to build 10586.456, it also brings a number of fixes on PCs.
As we told you yesterday, these cumulative updates aren’t supposed to bring new features, but to only introduce bug fixes and performance improvements, as they’re developed to address problems that users find in the operating system. And with the Insider program, Microsoft is testing the cumulative updates before releasing them to users, making sure that everything runs smoothly when everyone gets it.

In today’s case, the KB3170411 cumulative update comes with reliability improvements to several apps, including Windows Media Player, Internet Explorer 11, Miracast, and the Windows kernel. There is also a fix supposed to correct a bug causing some PCs to display a black screen on the lock screen when resuming from connected standby, but also for a problem leading to local user accounts not getting locked out after a number of failed sign-in attempts.
For Windows 10 Mobile users, this cumulative update brings a fix for an issue where Windows Phone loses user authentication certificates after upgrading to the new OS, but also brings improved support “to honor the data backup settings of applications on Windows 10 Mobile.”
There’s still no mention of when all users could get the cumulative update too, but the chances are that the release will take place on Patch Tuesday, which this month happens on July 12. Until then, insiders need to test this out thoroughly and send any bugs they find to Microsoft.
