Palm extends App Catalog half price promotion, eliminates app submission fee

Not too long ago, Sunnyvale-based mobile phone maker Palm announced that most of the applications available for the users of a webOS-based handset via the App Catalog are available at only half the original price. It seems that the promotion was received very well along users, and the company decided to extend its availability all the way to July 23.

“We’re so happy with the response that we’ve decided to extend the sale for an additional two weeks. Not only this will give customers more time to explore the catalog and get great deals on your apps, it will give you more time to generate sales and revenue. If you currently have marketing in place to take advantage of this sale, get ready to extend it to July 23rd,” a recent post on Palm Developer Blog reads.

According to the mobile phone maker, it registered increases in the downloads of both paid and free applications since the promotion kicked off. For what it's worth, this might seem as a great opportunity for application developers to submit apps to the software portal, since users are so interested in the content there. Not to mention that Palm announced that developers would be able to submit apps for free, as the $50 fee has been removed from the equation.

When launching the developers program, Palm announced that those interested in having their software solutions distributed should pay a $50 per app fee for each and every submission to the Palm App Catalog. Not only was the fee removed, but Palm also announced that it would start refunding developers for the fees the company collected in the past.

The Hot Apps promotion that we kicked off back in February is about to end with over 400 developers receiving a share of a million dollars. We recently launched the Summer Half Off promotion—a 50% discount for nearly every app in our U.S. catalog, funded by Palm. And we’re just getting started. In July, we’re launching the new PDK Hot Apps promotion-another million dollars to developers, this time focused on the C/C++ apps that were excluded from the original Hot Apps promotion,” one can read on the Palm Developer Blog.
