Crash course in what light is made of and how it behaves

Light is just one of the things that, although part of our day-to-day life, is usually ignored. It's there when we need to see the world around us. It's even helping scientists understand the birth and the evolution of the cosmos. All the same, few people give it much thought.

Well, for those of you who think they might be interested in learning what light is all about, here's a cool video explaining what it's made of and its behavior.

The video describes light as the smallest quantity of energy that can be transported, with photons being the elementary particles that comprise it. Just think of photons as packets of energy that cannot be split, but only created or destroyed. It's all pretty straightforward, right?

What's really cool about light is that, when we think about it, pretty much the only thing that comes to mind is visible light, meaning the light we can see.

However, there's also infrared and ultraviolet light, which both fall outside the visible spectrum and so we cannot observe them with the naked eye. Rather, we need special equipment.

These other types of light that aren't visible to our human senses comprise photons that contain a different amount of energy than the ones we can detect.

As for where light comes from, it's produced in stars like the Sun. More precisely, scientists say a photon is created when electrons in the atoms that make up stars get pushed between orbits.
