Windows Hello will work on both Lumia 950 and 950 XL

Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile come with support for the so-called Windows Hello biometric authentication feature, and Microsoft’s new devices, such as the Lumia 950 and 950 XL, include the necessary hardware to use it too.

While neither the Lumia 950 nor the Lumia 950 XL is available right now, anyone can experience the power of Windows Hello on Surface tablets and laptops, or simply by paying a visit to the nearest Microsoft store to try out the phone models on display.

This is exactly what happens in the video below, as Lumia 950 XL is taken for a spin at a store in Oslo. Windows Hello was obviously one of the most tested features.

How it works

As you can see in this real-life demo of Windows Hello, users first have to configure biometric authentication, just like any other security system available on the operating system. A backup password is also required in case the authentication system fails to work properly and doesn’t recognize your face.

To configure Windows Hello on the Lumia 950 XL, go to the next path:

Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Windows Hello

Follow the wizard to configure Windows Hello, let it scan your face for the initial setup, provide a backup password, and then you should be good to go.

Obviously, you can always change settings in case your appearance changes significantly, as Microsoft explains, but you’ll need to re-enroll. “The system will recognize past and current enrollments, for example you with or without a beard, glasses, or heavy makeup,” It says.

Probably the best thing about Windows Hello is that it seems to be blazing fast, at least in this demo, so there’s no doubt that it’ll be one of the most popular features of the new Lumia models. But keep in mind, however, that it’ll only be offered on high-end models, and not on the full lineup of phones.
