Here's how to stay entertained when your friends abandon you

If you're the kind of guy or gal who likes to play the mad scientist now and again, here are some neat tricks you can try when all your friends abandon you and you have nothing to do with your time.

Worry not, you don't need any special equipment to manage either of these experiments. The things you probably already have lying around your house will do just fine.

For instance, all it takes to engineer your very own slow moving ball is some honey, a steel ball and a spherical container. Simply put honey inside the container, add the steel ball, seal it and then let it roll.

It will seem like you're watching a slow-mo video when actually the honey will be keeping the container and the steel ball from moving as fast as they normally would.

Then, you can try and start a fire using nothing but a black marker, some paper and a bottle of water. For starters, color a black blotch on the paper. Then, use the water to focus rays on it and set it alight.

Another cool trick that seems worthwhile is using liquids of different densities and distinct colors to devise a rainbow-like bottle. If you're happy with the result, perhaps you can even put it on display.

True, there's not much hard science to these tricks - they seem more like party tricks than proper science experiments, but they do seem like fun so why not give them a try?
