Blizzard decided to patch the old Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos game and bring widescreen support, along with a number of other new features.

Blizzard is known for their commitment to their games, and Warcraft 3 is not the only title that’s been updated after more than a decade from its launch. To be fair, they had a really good reason, and that is the existing number of players.

Despite the fact that Warcraft 3 was released all the way back in 2002, it still have a large fan base. Truth be told, Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos probably has more active players than many of the games launched this year, and that says a lot.

More than just widescreen

The patch being released for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos doesn’t just cover the support for widescreen, which is a welcome addition. The developer also added bookends to the in-game interface and black pillars in menus so that they’re not stretched by the increased resolution, and now 24 players lobbies are available as well.

Furthermore, ladder standings have been reset, people can now create clans once more, the MacOS version actually launches, a number of missing textures are now shown, and ladder maps cleansed of sneaky tower locations near starting mines.

What makes this patch even more interesting is the fact that Blizzard decided to throw in some balancing changes, which is very weird for a game that’s 16 years old. Players must have been used to a certain type of gameplay, but now they will need to adjust. They’re not major changes, and in most cases, it possible that regular players won’t even notice them, but it’s a big decision nonetheless.

It’s also exciting to see that Blizzard is still invested in patching old titles, and from the looks of it, they will continue to push updates for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos in the future.
