Three very important Justin Bieber-related things happened last night at the MTV Video Music Awards 2015: he made his comeback to live performing, he premiered his new song “What Do You Mean?” and he debuted a brand new hairstyle, one that he’s been keeping covered for months.

There was a time when Justin Bieber’s hair was so important to his fans that cutting his bangs instantly resulted in him losing tens of thousands of followers on social media. So no wonder they’re feeling very confused right now about what’s happening on his head.

It’s been months that Justin Bieber has been very careful about not removing his baseball cap in public. He was occasionally seen without one, but then he’d have like a small man bun, which was the surest hint that he was growing out his hair.

Because Justin shot to international fame with a certain image, one that also included his hairstyle and which he made sure not to change in the years to come, he now needs to ditch it. His previous attempts at showing the world that he’s no longer a teen heartthrob phenomenally backfired on him, which triggered the apology tour he’s still doing.

As we speak, Justin is struggling to distance himself as much as possible from everything that he was before, including that banged hairstyle that started an Internet meme about him having no forehead.

So he chose a different hairstyle as well, which he debuted at last night’s awards show. It’s not exactly flattering.

Why did Justin opt for the Kate Gosselin hairdo?

This is the question on fans and random commenters’ lips right now. As you can see from the Twitter samples below, few were taken with Bieber’s new hairstyle, which they found almost as hilarious as the half-long half-short ‘do Kate Gosselin was also sporting back in her heyday, when her now-defunct reality show Jon and Kate Plus 8 was still bringing in the ratings for TLC.

Some compared it to Donald Trump’s weave, when it gets caught in a sudden gust of wind, others to a ‘do you would expect on an emo kid with no skills at styling and definitely not Bieber’s money, to afford a professional to take care of it.

All agreed that Bieber can - and should - do better than this, hair-wise. The fans were particularly saddened by his latest look, because they find him absolutely, irresistibly handsome, and they feel as if it does him no favors in this regard.
