VLC was, is, and will certainly continue to be one of the most (if not really the most) popular media player on the majority of platforms out there.

And iOS is no exception, as iPhone owners rely on VLC to play their multimedia content in a very straightforward manner.

This week, VideoLAN announced a new version of VLC that brings major improvements to iOS, iPadOS, and tvOS with the update to build 3.3.

What’s new in this VLC update

First and foremost, this week’s update introduces a new video player interface, as well as support to browse NFS and SFTP shares. There’s also support for HTTPS downloads that require authentication as well as automatic video deinterlacing enabled by default.

The team at VideoLAN has also added a new full black theme for OELD devices (this makes sense given most new iPhones use OLED screens), as well as SMB Server download support.

The team explains the update comes with substantial performance improvements, as well as with lots of other refinements to avoid heating issues during the playback.

“This update adds a completely re-written video playback interface, adds support for browsing NFS and SFTP network shares, includes major speed improvements avoiding heating issues and greatly improves the local media library appearance especially for audio. Further, it enables a full black theme and access to all locally stored media including on external devices such as attached USB thumb drives. Of course, it adds various small fixes and many special interest features such as SAT>IP support,” VideoLAN explains.

As compared to other app makers that have already abandoned older versions of iOS, VLC continues to support iOS 9 and later, and this is impressive to say the least. Furthermore, the update comes with massive performance improvements for older iPhones, so you know what you have to do if you’re a VLC fan.
