VideoLAN working on universal app version of VLC

The team at VideoLAN has already started work on the universal app version of VLC, the multimedia player that exists on pretty much all platforms out there and works with 99 percent of the formats currently in use.

Although it’s still in its very early days, the VLC for Windows 10 universal app seems to come with a very intuitive and straightforward UI that should make it easy to play any format on a PC or smartphone running the new OS. The universal app will be able to run on all devices on Windows 10, including here PCs and smartphones.

Details have not yet been provided, but the first screenshots showing VLC for Windows 10 in action reveal both the music and video playing interface, although this is very likely to be tweaked before the application makes it to the store.

No release date

As to when the Windows 10 version of VLC could see daylight, nothing is certain for the moment, as the company still wants to improve the Windows 8.1 version before focusing more on this project.

"We're working on a Windows 8.1 release and preparing the Windows 10 port, it takes time for many reasons. We'll give news. But currently, honestly, we're still focusing on Windows 8.1 instead of Windows 10 because we think many WP8.1 won't receive W10M. We'll start working fully W10/W10M when we think we have a good last release to send to the WP8.1 that will not see W10M,” VideoLAN developer Thomas Nigro said in January.

That’s why the Windows Phone 8.1 version has recently received important updates, according to the development team.

“A lot of fixes for the interface got in, but also compilation issues, fixes for WP8.1; we also got important changes on the Pivot and the SlideShow and on the responsive sizing and animations”
