14 DAY TRIAL // VLC was, is, and will definitely continue to be one of the most advanced multimedia players on Windows, and since Microsoft’s pushing so hard for universal apps, VideoLAN developers are working to create a Windows 10 version too.
And according to Thomas Nigro, one of the devs who are working hard to make this happen, the release is expected to take place very soon.
An announcement made yesterday revealed that the VideoLAN team planned “to release something today (in a few hours)” and then switch to a one update per week schedule for the store app. There still were some blocking bugs, including smooth streaming not working properly, according to another tweet, and this is holding back the release on Windows 10.
But more recently, he said that developers were working to fix bugs “one by one” and the goal was to submit a package to the store sometime today, which means that, with a little luck, VLC for Windows 10 should land very soon.
Updates to land on a weekly basis
The plan to release updates on a weekly basis was first announced in April, when Thomas Nigro also revealed that the Windows Phone version would no longer be supported starting this month.
“To be completely honest - the first upcoming versions won’t have many more features than the current version of VLC for Windows Store. All those features will be present in the May/June timeframe. We’ll add new features on a weekly basis,” he announced at that time.
Windows 10 Mobile devices will only be allowed to download the VLC app for Windows 10 if they run Redstone builds, with VideoLAN pointing out that TH2 is very likely not to be supported because of the number of limitations that are currently implemented.
And of course, users of Windows 10 running the OS on their PCs can always download the desktop version of VLC, which continues to offer the best features for this kind of app. As far as the UWP version of the app is concerned, we shouldn’t have to wait too long before it lands.
