Adele’s first music video in years dropped last Friday. “Hello” is the leading single off the album “25,” which will be out on November 20 and will be Adele’s third studio release so far. The official music video now sits at almost 70 million views on YouTube, and it’s already spanned very popular memes.

A mashup with Lionel Richie’s 1983 hit of the same name was to be expected.

What comes as a surprise, though, is the fact that Richie himself would get in on the fun. The mashup started making the rounds online within hours of the official Adele release, but over the weekend, Richie too was tweeting about it.

You can see the mashup in the first video embedded below. The second one is the full song and video from Adele, including footage of her using a vintage flip phone, much to the amusement of today’s smartphone users.

Speaking of the phone, Xavier Dolan, who directed the video, told the media that he deliberately chose not to use a smartphone because he hated iPhones and felt like using one would be selling out, while also distracting from the story he was trying to tell.

Ironically, by trying to prevent that from happening, he did just that, because many people couldn’t stop talking about the flip phone seen in Adele’s hand. The same one she hangs up on Lionel Richie with.
