Daniel Radcliffe, James McAvoy star in new spin on the story

Two of the most talented and popular non-American actors, Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy, are starring in a new spin on the classic story of Dr. Frankenstein and his terrible monster, “Victor Frankenstein.”

The story is told by the doctor’s loyal aide, Igor, played by Radcliffe. A first trailer premiered online and is embedded below in full for your viewing pleasure. McAvoy is the mad scientist determined to use various body parts to create a new being, which he’ll bring back from the dead.

Much like “Sherlock Holmes” and the ill-inspired “The Three Musketeers,” to name just 2 movies of the genre, “Victor Frankenstein” is trying to combine the appeal of a classic horror story with modern elements like explosions and vicious, dangerous monsters.

The result is entertaining but slightly disappointing when you think it stars Radcliffe and McAvoy, who are, without a doubt, actors of impressive ranges and versatility. They feel somewhat miscast in a movie that’s beneath their set of skills.

There is also a certain campy feel about the trailer, but it could be just from the way it’s cut, i.e. the final cut of the film might be darker than we’re lead to believe here.

Directed by Paul McGuigan off a script by Max Landis (based on Mary Shelly’s famous novel), “Victor Frankenstein” is scheduled for theatrical release on October 2, 2015.
