No word on Android 6.0 Marshmallow updates though

Major carrier Verizon has been pretty slow with Android updates, but that's not surprising for customers. In fact, most carriers offer Android upgrades to their devices much later than the ones released for unlocked phones.

The good news is at least two devices at Verizon are now eligible for another Android update: Sony Xperia Z3v and Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet.

The Big Red has just announced on its support website that both Sony devices are now receiving Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update. Since both have been launched with Android 4.4 KitKat more than a year ago, this looks like a significant upgrade.

Of course, the Xperia Z2 Tablet was previously updated to Android 5.0.2 Lollipop months ago, but another update is always welcomed.

Xperia Z3v gets HD Voice support too

According to Verizon, the new update brings “Android beyond smartphones and tablets, allowing access to apps and Android services on other connected screens like TVs, cars and wearables.”

Also, the new material design included in the update provides more complex animations and 3-D views, 64-bit ABI support and improved runtime. Naturally, the latest Android security patches are included in the update as well.

In regards to the Xperia Z3v, Verizon confirmed the same new features and improvements mentioned earlier. Furthermore, the update also brings HD Voice feature, which should provide high-quality call audio, video calling and simultaneous use of voice and data.

The carrier did not share any other details on the update, so we don't know how big it is, but you should have at least 1GB of storage free just in case.

Although there's a high chance that these devices will eventually receive Android 6.0 Marshmallow updates, it's unclear whether or not Verizon will make the upgrade available as well.

Even if the Big Red decides to do that, seeing how slow the carrier is moving with these updates, it might not happen until later this year.
