We don't know how many they actually sold

Valve’s Index VR kit that was made available yesterday sold in just 30 minutes, which means that virtual reality is still going strong.

Valve has been pushing virtual reality for a long time. We can still remember when they were adding Oculus support to all of their titles before Facebook bought it. Everyone thought that VR is going to be the future, and we would wear some form of VR by the end of the decade.

While it’s true that VR has advanced considerably, the technology also got a lot more expensive. Now, if you don’t have any of the previous Vive hardware, a full Valve Index VR kit will set you back for about $1000.

The latest iPhone or the latest Valve VR?

We’re not making that choice just yet, but it would be an easy one. At roughly the same price (phones are actually more expensive) you’re getting something that can propel your imagination into the future.

According to a report from uploadvr.com, the Valve Index VR kit was sold out in just 30 minutes, and now the new shipping date for the next batch is September 30th, 2019, for The United States.

There are a couple of unknowns. First of all, Valve is not a company known for sharing sales numbers. It’s privately owned, and they don’t have to answer to anyone. We simply don’t know how many were available in the first place.

Secondly, it’s hard to tell how many of the buyers were new ones. Is Valve getting new adepts for the technology or are they selling to the same people who bought Vive?

It’s worth noting that the new Index VR is built by Valve and it’s not in partnership with HTC, so it’s new territory for the company as well. It remains to be seen how is the new Oculus Rift S from Facebook is going to fare, especially since it comes with a $400 price point.
