It's been more than 20 years since the release of the original Half-Life game and we still didn't get the third episode. After so many years, one would think that Valve has dropped any plans of returning to the Half-Life series, but it looks like the company thinks otherwise.
After investing so many resources in VR tech, Valve announced that the next chapter for the Half-Life franchise will unfold in virtual reality. Half-Life: Alyx is the name of Valve's upcoming “flagship VR game” and, as the name suggests, is about Alyx Vance, Gordon Freeman's co-star in Half-Life 2.
Valve hasn't revealed anything else about the game beyond the title, but it did promise to offer more information about Half-Life: Alyx on November 21, which coincides with the 21-year anniversary of the original Half-Life's release on PC.
PCGamer reported earlier today that Valve will announce a flagship virtual reality game called Half-Life: Alyx. The information comes via a transcript of a leaked interview that confirms that the game will be shown at The Game Awards on December 12.
The interview between Geoff Keighley and Robin Walker (co-developer of Team Fortress 2) and a third unnamed person also mentions that Half-Life: Alyx will be released in March 2020. When asked if the game would be available for players without VR headsets, Valve's official was a bit vague, but didn't rule out the possibility:
“I mean we would love to be delivering a version of this that you could play with a mouse and a keyboard, but like as we said, it began as an exploration of VR.”
Another report by ArsTechnica claims that Half-Life: Alyx is not a sequel to Half-Life 2 as many would have expected, but a prequel to the series. We'll probably find out more in just a few days, although gameplay footage might not be released until December 12.
