Microsoft’s universal app concept moves forward

Microsoft pushes very hard for the universal app concept, and it turns out that more and more developers discover the opportunity in this approach and build apps that can run on both Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile.

The latest in this series is none other than the United States Postal Service, which has launched a universal app for Windows 10 that helps track packages from any device running the new operating system.

Called “My USPS,” the new app come with options to verify your identity and thus protect your accounts, configure emails and text alerts for your packages, view incoming packages and track them interactively on a map, scan the barcode on a shipping label with the phone camera and get shipment information, and even view pictures of incoming mail via the Informed Delivery dashboard.

Cortana support also offered

Furthermore, the application has also integrated support for digital assistant Cortana, so you can ask her to track your packages and provide updated information whenever it’s available.

And because it’s a universal app, it can be installed on both PCs and smartphones running Windows 10, so in the case of phones, note that Windows 10 Mobile is needed to run it.

“Preview the My USPS package tracking dashboard on your Windows 10 computer using Cortana. The My USPS application offers an alternative to typing in package tracking numbers every time you want to see the status of a delivery. The My USPS application proactively scans the USPS mail-stream looking for packages heading for your home address and automatically populates your dashboard with a package’s status,” the official description of the app posted in the Windows Store states.

Certainly, seeing another universal app arriving in the store can only be good news for both Microsoft and its users, as this is the only way to tackle one of the biggest problems of the platform. Many criticized Windows 10 for the lack of apps, so hopefully, the universal app concept can help address it once and for all.
