Otherwise the upgrade might be blocked, Microsoft warns

Microsoft has recently announced a new upgrade block for devices running specific antivirus products, explaining that users must update their security software to the latest versions before installing Windows 10 version 1909 (November 2019 Update).

The Redmond-based software giant explains that Avast Antivirus and AVG Antivirus are the two affected products, with versions 19.5.4444.567 said to trigger the upgrade block and prevent devices from being offered the latest Windows 10 feature update.

“To safeguard your upgrade experience, we have applied a hold on devices with affected Avast and AVG Antivirus from being offered or installing Windows 10, version 1903 or Windows 10, version 1909, until the application is updated,” Microsoft explains.

The good news is that simply updating the antivirus software removes the upgrade block and allows your device to be offered the November 2019 Update, of course, if no other compatibility holds are in place.

Do not manually install version 1909

Microsoft, however, recommends users to avoid installing the November 2019 Update using other methods if the antivirus products are not updated, as your device could end up hitting other issues once the new version is deployed.

“We recommend that you do not attempt to manually update using the Update now button or the Media Creation Tool until a new version of your Avast or AVG application has been installed and the Windows 10, version 1903 or Windows 10, version 1909 feature update has been automatically offered to you,” Microsoft says.

If you’re looking for additional information for your security software, you can check these two official pages for the two affected products: Avast support KB article and AVG support KB article.

Windows 10 version 1909 is rolling out to devices in stages, so if you updated your antivirus product and the new version still isn’t available for download, there’s a good chance your system is targeted by another upgrade block.
