The service works on a number of compatible devices

UK carrier Three has just announced that it started offering app-free WiFi calling to customers in the UK. The service isn’t exactly new, as Three has been offering WiFi calls for years through an app called inTouch.

Three’s inTouch app isn’t exactly ideal, considering that it takes up space on the device and is part of the carrier-bundled groups of apps that not everyone is pleased to have on their phones. Competitors like Vodafone and EE have been offering simplified WiFi calling options and Three seems to have gotten the idea and is now doing the same.

The UK carrier has announced that users will be able to place calls in areas where phone signal isn’t available or is quite poor, like the subway. Customers will be able to use WiFi networks in order to place a call, without having to access the inTouch app.

A number of smartphones are compatible with the service

Three’s app free feature is available for Android and iOS smartphones and could be used by customers to place calls or send text messages through the WiFi network, according to Engadget.

Customers will have to make sure that they have the latest phone software and carrier settings installed on their devices in order to use the feature. Phones that are compatible with WiFi calling on Three’s network have the “Three WiFi Call” message at the top left of the screen.

App-free WiFi calling is available for a number of smartphones, including the iPhone 5c, 5s, 6, 6s, SE and iPhone 7. Multiple phones are on the list of supported Android devices, like LG G5, Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge. Three will provide the app-free WiFi calling service to Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge in mid-February, while a series of other devices are expected to support the feature in the coming months.
