The UBports community released today the 10th OTA (Over-the-Air) update to their community-developed Ubuntu Touch operating system for supported Ubuntu Phone devices.

Coming three and a half months after the OTA-9 release, the Ubuntu Touch OTA-10 update is now available with better hardware compatibility for Fairphone 2, Nexus 5, and OnePlus One smartphones by implementing proper camera orientation and audio routing on the Fairphone 2, and fixing audio and video sync problems on the Fairphone 2 and OnePlus One.

Additionally, Ubuntu Touch OTA-10 improves the reliability and speed of Wi-Fi based geolocation functionality by removing the "wolfpack" tool, which used the Geoclue service for gathering approximate location data. However, it may take more than 20 minutes for some users to have their location retrieved after updating to Ubuntu Touch OTA-10.

"This should only occur if the device is not connected to a mobile network and location services have not been used for a very long time," said UBports. "With the service working reliably again, we are experimenting with solutions that will make it possible for us to have reliable and fast location fixes. Most interesting among these is Ubuntu's locationd, which offers out-of-the-box support for the Mozilla Location Service assisted GPS solution."

Messaging app improvements, basic sound support for Android 7.1 devices

Also new in the Ubuntu Touch OTA-10 release is an improved Messaging app that now supports draft messages when sending SMS or MMS messages are lets users select between the dark or light theme or the system's default one, basic PulseAudio sound and camera support for Android 7.1 devices, as well as an improved Libertine legacy application manager that now lets you search for packages in the archive and select one to install from a list.

Ubuntu Touch OTA-10 is now rolling out to all supported devices, including Fairphone 2, OnePlus One, Nexus 5, Nexus 4, BQ Aquaris M10 HD and FHD, BQ Aquaris E4.5, BQ Aquaris E5, Meizu MX 4, Meizu PRO 5, as well as Nexus 7 2013 Wi-Fi and LTE. All users are urged to update their devices as soon as possible. The UBports community is now working on the next major release, Ubuntu Touch OTA-11, which should be out later this year.
