Canonical has recently released Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS, the very first point release for version 20.04. And of course, the focus is on bug fixing, so you’ll find a lot of things that have been improved in this update.

First and foremost, what you need to know is that this update also ships with new installation media, so if you’re coming from a different distro, Windows, or an older version of Ubuntu, if you get the latest ISO images, you should be able to jump straight to 20.04.1.

What’s more, Canonical says that users still running Ubuntu 18.04 LTS will soon be offered an automatic upgrade to 20.04.1 LTS via the Update Manager.

And of course, this new release comes with updates for all the official flavors of Ubuntu, so today you’re also able to download the following too:

  • Kubuntu 20.04.1 LTS
  • Ubuntu Budgie 20.04.1 LTS
  • Ubuntu MATE 20.04.1 LTS
  • Lubuntu 20.04.1 LTS
  • Ubuntu Kylin 20.04.1 LTS
  • Ubuntu Studio 20.04.1 LTS
  • Xubuntu 20.04.1 LTS

What’s new in this update?

As for the changes that are part of the update, there are lots of them, and a detailed changelog is available on this page.

However, worth noting is that Canonical has improved the experience with the update-manager with plenty of fixes, including for the issue causing a small freezing during snap updates.

Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS also comes with support for the new server NVIDIA drivers, Intel Tiger Lake, plus with additional microcode fixes aimed at Skylake processors.

And of course, there are software updates for a number of pre-loaded apps, including LibreOffice, the productivity suite that’s just the best alternative to Microsoft Office in the Linux world. More fixes have also been added to Thunderbird, Mesa, Firefox, and Pulse audio, so overall, the experience should be more polished both in the OS and when using the pre-loaded apps.
