Users urged to upgrade to a newer, supported Ubuntu release

We just received an email announcement from Canonical's Adam Conrad where he informs the Ubuntu community that the Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) operating system will reach end of life later this month, on July 20, 2017.

Some of you out there were aware of the fact that their Ubuntu 16.10 operating system will reach end of life sometime in July, but now the date was set in stone, 20 July 2017. That's only a little over two weeks from the moment of writing, so you shall start the upgrade process to a newer, supported version of Ubuntu Linux.

"Ubuntu announced its 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) release almost 9 months ago, on October 13, 2016.  As a non-LTS release, 16.10 has a 9-month support cycle and, as such, the support period is now nearing its end and Ubuntu 16.10 will reach end of life on Thursday, July 20th," says Adam Conrad in the email announcement.

Users urged to upgrade to Ubuntu 17.04 (Zesty Zapus)

Adam Conrad urges all users still using the Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) operating system to upgrade their installations to the latest release, Ubuntu 17.04 (Zesty Zapus). Details instructions and caveats for the entire upgrade process are available at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ZestyUpgrades.

Launched last year on October 13, Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) was supported for only nine months, which means that starting on July 20, 2017, it will no longer receive security and software updates. That's why it's imperative to upgrade your operating system to a newer version as soon as possible.

Ubuntu 16.10 was based on the Linux 4.8 kernel, which is currently the HWE (Hardware Enablement) kernel for users of the Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system, which will probably switch to a newer kernel stack from Ubuntu 17.04 (Zesty Zapus) when the Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS point release will be announced in August this year.
