Following on their promise to continue the development of the Ubuntu Touch mobile operating system for Ubuntu Phone and Tablet devices, the UBports team is today proud to announce the first stable OTA update.

Thanks to the generous donations and hands-on help from many fans of the Ubuntu Touch OS, UBports is launching today the OTA-1 stable update for all of their officially supported Ubuntu Phone devices, except Nexus 4 and Nexus 5. The OTA-1 update is available for installation right now via the built-in OTA system.

Besides the usual bug fixes and security patches, this first OTA Ubuntu Touch update from UBports is brining experimental AGPS (Assisted GPS) support, OpenStore as default app store for installing apps, a brand-new UBports Welcome app, and pre-installed Terminal and File Browser apps.

"The UBports project is proud to announce Stable OTA-1 for all of our officially supported devices, minus the Nexus 5 (hammerhead) and Nexus 4 (mako)," reads today's announcement. "OTA-1 is the culmination of our efforts over the past two months. It brings many bug fixes and enhancements to the platform."

Nexus 5 users will get the OTA-1 update shortly

Due to a last-minute regression found in the battery meter, the UBports developers were forced to pull the update for Nexus 5 devices, but they promise to release it in the coming days too. Same goes for Nexus 4 users, who will get the OTA-1 update soon, but a release date has not been announced.

In the announcement, the UBports devs also revealed the fact that work on the Halium project aimed at standardizing the Android hardware compatibility layer between many GNU/Linux distributions advances, and it can now boot Ubuntu Touch and KDE's Plasma Mobile mobile operating systems on the Nexus 5.
