The free-to-play battle royale was launched in 2020

Ubisoft’s most recent attempts to continue beloved franchises (Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon) or establish new IPs (Hyper Scape) proved to be total fiascos. The free-to-play Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Frontline has been met with dismay by the fans when it was revealed a few months ago, and now Hyper Scape is going to be shut down, Ubisoft announced this week.

Although no reason for the decision has been offered, it’s not hard to guess that the free-to-play futuristic PvP game wasn’t appealing enough to justify the resources Ubisoft has poured into it. Even Ubisoft doesn’t believe that the game is worth more than a footnote on its blog, since that’s exactly how we learned about its plans to shut down Hyper Scape.

"We have made the difficult decision to end development of Hyper Scape and shut the game down as of April 28th. We set out to create a vertical, close-quarters, and fast-paced shooter experience and we are extremely grateful to our community for joining us on our journey. We will be taking key learnings from this game into future products. To the Hyper Scape community, thank you for your passion and dedication to the world of Neo Arcadia both inside and outside of the game. Your devotion to the game we built will always be cherished."

It's unclear whether or not the game will continue to be supported until April, but at this point, we don’t think it matters. For those who’ve never played Hyper Scape and always wanted to give it a try, you still have a few months to remove that on your bucket list.

Ubisoft debuted Hyper Scape back in 2020 and was convinced that the formula will work. It was the company’s attempt to break into the battle royale genre made popular by Fortnite and Apex Legends. Ghost Recon Frontline is another take on the battle royale formula, something that Ubisoft seems to be obsessed with lately.
