Ubisoft has just revealed new information about its Assassin's Creed franchise and things don't look so well for fans of the beloved games.

The French company has decided to take a sabbatical year in 2016 and it won't release an Assassin's Creed game. While development on current Assassin's Creed games will continue, no new titles in the franchise will be launched in 2016.

According to Ubisoft, the studio will step back from Assassin's Creed games and re-examine the status of the franchise. The decision seems to be based on the feedback gathered from fans who have become fewer in the last couple of years.

“Since the release of Assassin’s Creed Unity, we’ve learned a lot based on your feedback. We’ve also updated our development processes and recommitted to making Assassin’s Creed a premier open-world franchise.

“We’re taking this year to evolve the game mechanics and to make sure we’re delivering on the promise of Assassin’s Creed offering unique and memorable gameplay experiences that make history everyone’s playground,” explains Ubisoft in a blog post.

Fans will still be able to get their fair share of Assassin's Creed action

The latest reports about an Assassin's Creed game date from early January when sources with knowledge of Ubisoft plans said the next title in the franchise will be released in 2017.

The same rumor claims the next Assassin's Creed game will take players to Egypt, but a market name hasn't been decided yet.

But fans of the franchise won't have to wait until next year to get a taste of Assassin's Creed action, as Ubisoft announced the movie with the same name would hit theaters on December 21, 2016.

There's also an iOS game called Assassin's Creed Identity that should be released on February 25. So, there's plenty happening in the Assassin's Creed universe this year as well.
