Ubisoft recently announced Assassin's Creed Infinity, a live online game service platform dedicated to the long-running franchise. The announcement follows Jason Schreier's report about the project but adds little to no information to the story.

It looks like Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Infinity live service is meant to emulate the success of similar online platforms like Fortnite and Grand Theft Auto V, but it also aims to “exceed the expectations of fans who have been asking for a more cohesive approach.”

Typically, Assassin's Creed games are developed by different teams from Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Quebec. For example, Assassin's Creed Odyssey was made by Ubisoft Quebec, whereas Assassin's Creed Valhalla was fully developed by Ubisoft Montreal.

However, with Assassin's Creed Infinity, both studios will collaborate for any future projects. Ubisoft announced that Jonathan Dumont and Clint Hocking will share leadership as creative directors for their respective teams at Ubisoft Quebec and Ubisoft Montreal.

This is an important change meant to help the Assassin's Creed series “evolve in a more integrated and collaborative manner that's less centered on studios and more focused on talent and leadership, no matter where they are within Ubisoft.”

Since the project is still early in development, it's hard to tell what the future Assassin's Creed content will look like. What's certain is that Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Infinity live service is unlikely to emulate platforms or Anthem.

From what the announcement says, Ubisoft seems rather concerned with having a more unified, coherent Assassin's Creed development cycle rather than forcing people into playing online/multiplayer games.

Currently, Ubisoft launches a new Assassin's Creed game every two years, but once Infinity goes live, the French developer might start releasing smaller Assassin's Creed experiences more often. Assassin's Creed Infinity is still a few years away, so it's best not to make any assumption on what exactly it will look like.
