Uber has decided to join The Linux Foundation as a Gold member, the company announced at the Uber Open Summit 2018.

Furthermore, Uber is now part of the TODO Group as well, which according to an official press release, is specifically supposed to allow companies that are participating in the initiative to collaborate on projects and tools based on open-source solutions.

Uber’s focus on open source has become a priority for the company given its latest projects, and following investments in data vizualization, machine learning, and projects like Jaeger, it makes sense for the company to join The Linux Foundation.

Microsoft also a member

With a Gold member status, Uber will get access to a series of other technologies, like the Open Network Automation Platform (ONAP), Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), Hyperledger, EdgeX Foundry, Automotive Grade Linux, and Core Infrastructure Initiative.

“Open source technology is the backbone of many of Uber’s core services and as we continue to mature, these solutions will become ever more important,” said Thuan Pham, Uber CTO in a typical press realeasy statement.

“The Linux Foundation not only provides homes to many significant open source projects, but also creates an open environment for companies like Uber to work together on developing these technologies. We are honored to join the Linux Foundation to foster greater collaboration with the open source community.”

As you may know if you’re familiar with The Linux Foundation’s work, the group of members is continuously expanding, and big names in the tech industry are already part of the effort. For example, companies like Baidu, Facebook, Toshiba, and Toyota are already Gold members.

Microsoft itself is also a member of The Linux Foundation, which kind of makes sense given the software giant’s investments in the open-source world lately.
