Apple’s App Tracking Transparency, which has officially landed with the release of iOS 14.5 a few weeks ago, has caused quite a controversy out there, with some companies, including Facebook, criticizing the Cupertino-based tech giant for making it more difficult to serve relevant ads.

Twitter hasn’t publicly commented on Apple’s new privacy policy, but the company has recently turned to an approach that others have embraced too.

The latest version of Twitter for iOS now shows a prompt that requires users to allow the tracking across other apps and websites in order to get more relevant ads.

“More choices for relevant ads on iOS 14.5. Keep ads relevant to you by allowing Twitter to track data from other companies on this device, like apps you use and websites you visit. You can decide if you’ll allow tracking in the iOS prompt and you can always change this later in your device settings,” the prompt reads.

Facebook’s more aggressive approach

At the first glance, Twitter’s approach is a lot friendlier than Facebook, as the social network giant has turned to a rather aggressive strategy, telling users they need to enable the tracking because otherwise, its apps may no longer be free.

In other words, Facebook says that without tracking, apps like Facebook and Instagram can’t remain free of charge, suggesting that at one point, users might have to pay to install them.

“This version of iOS requires us to ask for permission to track some data from this device to improve your ads. Learn how we limit the use of this information if you don’t turn on this device setting. We use information about your activity received from other apps and websites to show you ads that are more personalized, help keep Facebook free of charge, support businesses that rely on ads to reach their customers.”

Similar messages have been displayed across all the other Facebook apps, including the official Instagram client.
