After keeping the Vampire Counts faction in Total War: Warhammer a mystery for most of the development cycle, the team at The Creative Assembly is eager to offer more details about the race and the units it will use to dominate the battlefield.

The full list of the troops that a player can create and bring to battle was shown last week, and now the studio is focusing on the Vargheist in a new video that shows how the creature was designed and how it will look in combat.

Vargheists are vampire siblings that have been abandoned once their brothers took power and have been sequestered deep within the castle grounds, constantly affected by water that is contaminated by Warpstone.

When they enter combat, the creatures can use their ability to fly to take down enemies with fangs and claws and to disrupt the battle lines of an opponent.

The Creative Assembly adds, "They are the darkness in a Vampire's soul made manifest. They are towering winged humanoids, each several times the size of a man. Though the Vargheists once walked and talked as lords amongst the chattel, these curse-born Vampires have devolved into ravenous predators desperate for the taste of blood."

Total War: Warhammer will explore a dying Old World

Gamers will be able to choose from the Empire, the Vampire Counts, the Greenskins and the Dwarves as they seek to make sure that the Old World is safe from the assaults of Chaos.

The Creative Assembly made its name creating deep strategy titles that used history as an inspiration, and the move to fantasy space gives the studio more freedom to explore interesting units like the Vargheist or the power of users of magic to control certain areas of the battlefield.

The developers have also explained that they are introducing a new take on siege battles, which will place a greater importance on the fight for the walls, and that flying units are a way to disrupt enemy lines that add more tactical depth.

The region system has also been re-worked to make it impossible for any one faction to dominate the map.

Total War: Warhammer will be offered only on the PC and is set to arrive on May 24, with gamers who are willing to place a pre-order able to get access to a new Chaos warriors pack, which features a new faction with unique mechanics and units.
