Gamers will have plenty of defensive options, no cavalry

Total War: Warhammer aims to give gamers a chance to get right into the fantasy world created by Games Workshop, and such an experience would be incomplete without the presence of the Dwarves, who are one of the four races that any fan will be able to control if they pick up the strategy title.

A new official blog post reveals all the units that players will be able to recruit in their settlements, given that they manage to create the various buildings that are required for each of them.

The Dwarfs are old and currently driven by their need for vengeance rather than any desire to conquer land or subdue other beings, with the entire race maintaining a massive book that gives them details about each slight they have suffered at the hands of others.

Their armies reflect their stubbornness and strength and focus on defensive action, with units that use heavy armor to protect themselves, ranks of infantry ready to protect both ranged units and powerful artillery.

The Legendary Lords of the faction in Total War: Warhammer include High King Thorgrim Grudgebearer, who uses the Axe of Grimnir and leads his troops into battle, and Slayer King Ungrim Ironfist, who needs to balance his desire for death with the fact that his people require leadership.

The Dwarven strategy will be influenced by the fact that they do not rebel and that they can access the Underway, tunnels that allow them to move quickly between points on the map if they are willing to accept some risk.

Dwarf players will field Ironbreakers, Slayers, Longbeards and more

Because of their reliance on infantry and their lack of mounted troops, the armies of the race will need to move slowly and focus on powerful groups of warriors who can break an enemy line.

The Ironbreakers fight in tight formation, with overlapping fields, and offer a way to anchor a line, while the Irondrakes offer a powerful ranged threat that can take out better-armed foes.

Total War: Warhammer Dwarves will also field Longbeards, experienced infantry who grumble about the good old times, and Slayers, who function as shock troops, and gyrocopters armed with Steam guns.

The full roster also includes Thane, a master engineer, a massive throne as a mount, Dwarf warriors, hammerers, miners with blasting charges, quarrellers, thunderers, cannons, flame cannons, the Grudge Thrower and the organ gun.

The Creative Assembly has promised that each faction included in Total War: Warhammer will feel unique both regarding units fielded and when it comes to the mechanics for the strategy map.

The game will allow players to control the Dwarves, the Vampire Counts, the Empire and the Greenskins as they try to conquer as much of the fantasy world as possible before facing a bigger threat.

Those who place a pre-order will be able to get a downloadable content pack that gives them the option to play as the forces of Chaos, complete with unique buildings and units.

Total War: Warhammer will be out on the PC on April 28 of 2016.
