Galaxy Watch 5 to sport a skin temperature sensor

The pandemic is about to end, or at least, that’s what the entire world hopes, and tech giants out there are only now coming with features that would have come in handy two years ago.

For example, Apple’s next iOS update will allow users to unlock their iPhone with Face ID even while wearing a mask. Samsung, on the other hand, wants to equip its next smartwatch with a skin thermometer.

Of course, measuring the body temperature is useful on many more occasions, not only during a pandemic, but it goes without saying customers would have needed such a capability at a time when the sales of classic skin thermometers skyrocketed anyway.

According to a recent report, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 will be equipped with this new sensor, possibly using infrared tech to determine your body temperature. It’s hard to say just how accurate the whole thing is going to be – as a matter of fact, I’ve tested several infrared thermometers in the last couple of years, and their results have been very inconsistent, to say the least.

Launch in August this year

Samsung, however, looks like it found a way to improve the accuracy, and the company is ready to bet big on this feature. The same source claims a thermometer will also be installed in the Galaxy Buds, but not even the company seems to be sure the tech has reached a reliability level that makes it ready for the market.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 is expected to launch in August, the source claims, and this makes perfect sense given this release timing aligns with the debut of the previous model.

Hopefully, the global health issue would be over by then, in which case the skin thermometer might no longer be a major selling point anyway.
