One of the most respected and beloved music composers in Hollywood has died. James Horner was 61 and he passed away when his private plane crashed in California.

News that Horner’s plane had crashed spread like wild fire on social media, but confirmation of whether he was in it at the time was still pending. Publicist Sylvia Patrycja has now confirmed that he was on board, in a statement on her Facebook page, which you will find available below.

Horner is the man behind the soundtracks of classic films like James Cameron’s “Titanic,” “Braveheart,” “A Beautiful Mind,” “Aliens” or the more recent “Avatar.”

He was nominated for an Oscar many times, and he got to go home with 2 of the coveted golden statuettes in 1997, when he won Best Original Dramatic Score for “Titanic” and Best Original Song for “My Heart Will Go On,” which was performed by Celine Dion.

His most recent work was for the first “Amazing Spider-Man” movie from Sony Pictures, which he ended up hating so much he refused to come back for the second (and last, despite plans from Sony to offer fans a new trilogy).

He was also booked to compose the score for the upcoming “Southpaw,” from director Antoine Fuqua and writer Kurt Sutter, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, and already a supposed strong Oscar contender.
