The company seems to be going after YouTube

TikTok continues to be an Internet sensation, and its number of users just keeps going up more and more. And while its short videos have become a signature that its entire fanbase just loves, TikTok is now making a change whose purpose is pretty obvious: transform the service into a YouTube rival in all regards.

TikTok has started allowing 10-minute videos, and this is quite a massive change for content creators who are exclusive to this platform.

By allowing users to post longer videos, TikTok is clearly trying to compete against YouTube, especially as Google’s platform is also betting big on original content.

On the other hand, YouTube has actually tried to embrace the approach that TikTok actually pioneered. The service has recently launched Shorts, a feature that allows users to create short videos a la TikTok.

The feature is now rolling out to users

TikTok, however, says its focus is to make it possible for content creators to share their creativity on the platform.

“We’re always thinking about new ways to bring value to our community and enrich the TikTok experience,” a company spokesperson was quoted as saying by The Verge. “Last year, we introduced longer videos, giving our community more time to create and be entertained on TikTok. Today, we’re excited to start rolling out the ability to upload videos that are up to 10 minutes, which we hope would unleash even more creative possibilities for our creators around the world.”

The feature is currently rolling out to accounts worldwide, and when it’s ready for you too, you should see a message in the account updates screen telling you that updating to the latest version of the app is required to take advantage of the feature on a mobile device. You can also access it on tiktok.com with no need for an app update.
