14 DAY TRIAL // The second-generation TicPods wireless earbuds launched this week to serve as a cheaper and, at least at first glance, as a more capable alternative to Apple’s AirPods.
And above all, TicPods 2 start from $99, which make them a rather compelling purchase in a market that’s rapidly growing.
The first thing you’ll notice when looking at the new earbuds is that they feature an open-fit design, with parent company Mobvoi claiming it spent more time particularly for reducing ambient noise. The case that the TicPods come with is 42 percent smaller than the original version, now being able to recharge using USB Type-C, whereas the predecessor supported micro-USB.
Just like TicPods Free, TicPods 2 Pro can be controlled by touch, but the feature has been greatly enhanced on this new generation.
The feature called TicHear now supports so-called Quick Commands, which means that you can control audio with your voice, using nothing more than commands like “Play Music,” “Pause Music,” “Pick Up,” or “Next Song.”

Furthermore, the device comes equipped with TicMotion, a new set of movement tracking tools that allow you to nod your head twice to pick up a call and shake twice to reject it.
As far as the audio quality is concerned, TicPods 2 rely on Qualcomm’s aptX Audio Encoder, and uses a dual-mic configuration with noise cancellation.
Quick Commands, TicMotion, and TicHear wake-up words are only available on the TicPods 2 Pro. On the other hand, quick pairing, in-ear detection, and OTA updates are offered on both TicPods 2 Pro and TicPods 2, albeit the latter only comes with a single mic with noise cancellation.
The earbuds come with a 30mAh battery, while the charging case adds another 390mAh.
TicPods 2 and TicPods 2 Pro will go on sale on January 15 and will be available in three colors, namely Navy, Ice, and Blossom. Customers who pre-order them before January 15 also receive a 10% discount.
