In a surprising move, THQ Nordic released a playable demo of something they called Gothic Remake two months ago. The studio wanted to know if fans would be interested in a remake of one of the best RPGs of all time, and even offered us a glance at what it could look like.

The playable demo was available for free and THQ Nordic used a survey to ask players for their feedback. The survey was taken offline a few days ago and, according to THQ Nordic, 43k people replied to its questions and more than 9k even wrote reviews on Steam.

Based on the feedback, THQ Nordic announced today that it has decided to go ahead with the Gothic Remake project. As such, the game will enter full production immediately. For that to happen, a new studio will be established in Barcelona, Spain, which will asses what players liked and what they want to be different than in the playable teaser.

We are up for the challenge to develop a full Gothic Remake which will stay as faithfully as possible to the original experience and transport the atmospheric world of Gothic into a high-quality look and carefully modernizing certain gameplay mechanics,” said Reinhard Pollice Business and Product Development Director at THQ Nordic.

One other thing worth mentioning is that Gothic Remake will be developed for PC and next-generation console. THQ Nordic revealed that there's no release window available yet and that the game will definitely not be released in 2020.

You can still download the Gothic playable prototype for free via Steam, but only if you own any of the games developed by Piranha Bytes such as Gothic, Gothic 2, Gothic 3, Risen, Risen 2, Risen 3 or ELEX. The prototype can't be bought so the only way to get it is to buy one of Piranha Bytes' games.
