14 DAY TRIAL // Microsoft is currently working on a dark theme for File Explorer, and the public release could happen in Windows 10 Redstone 5 alongside more Fluent Design touches.
But while the software giant’s improved version of the file manager is evolving at a rather slow pace, not the same thing can be said about projects developed by the Windows 10 user community, whose skilled designers envision further refinements regularly.
This is the case of the concept that you see here and which was published on reddit to imagine that File Explorer would look like with Fluent Design and a dark gray theme.
The acrylic effect in the left pane coupled with the dark gray on the right side creates a mix that seems to align with the Windows 10 aesthetic makeover that Microsoft is currently working on.
Dark theme coming in Redstone 5
At first glance, this concept actually looks better than what Microsoft is offering right now, and this makes some people wonder why the software giant needs so much time to implement a modern look in File Explorer.
But while this might seem like an easy thing to do, it’s important to keep in mind that rolling out an update for File Explorer doesn’t come down only to looks. Microsoft needs to improve the UI of the file manager while also having in mind usability and support for several screen sizes, so each element getting a redesign needs to be thoroughly inspected before being released in an early version of the facelift.
Eventually, all these refined parts should blend into the dark theme nicely, leading to what is expected to be a beautiful looking File Explorer.
But for the time being, there’s still no guarantee that the dark theme would be ready for the Redstone 5 update due in the fall, so fingers crossed for Microsoft to see these concepts and accelerate the development work for the File Explorer update.
