Microsoft has just released the first Skype build that runs natively on Apple Silicon. The new version, which is available today for Skype insiders, is significantly faster on Apple M1-powered Macs, while also improving audio and video quality during calls.

Full Apple Silicon support is available as part of Skype 8.94, but keep in mind that for now, only insiders can try it out.

Microsoft says the production rollout should kick off in the coming weeks, so expect everybody out there to be able to try out the new Skype on M1-powered devices by the end of the month.

The company says the performance difference between the legacy version of Skype and the build optimized for Apple Silicon is insane, with some tests revealing that the new release is even three times faster.

“After months of anticipation and customer demand, Skype has finally released its new update for Apple M1 Mac devices, and it's a game-changer – 3X Faster! Say goodbye to sluggish and slow call experiences, and hello to lightning-fast performance with crystal-clear audio and video quality,” Microsoft says.

“Skype’s optimized performance for the Apple Silicon M1 chip is designed to provide an unparalleled experience, delivering maximum performance and reliability. With this native Apple M1 support, Skype delivers faster and more reliable call connections, so you can stay connected with the people who matter most to you.”

In addition, the latest Skype Insider build also comes with a series of other fixes aimed at Apple users, including the following:
