Concept imagines a truly modern Start menu

The Windows 10 Start menu has gone through a series of minor changes since the operating system first launched in July 2015, but the overall look and feel are pretty much unchanged.

And it goes without saying that this isn’t exactly what users expect from a modern OS like Windows 10, especially because Microsoft is very committed to refining the overall experience with facelifts like the Fluent Design language.

While Microsoft still explores ways to overhaul the Start menu, the Windows community comes up with ideas that often take us by surprise, especially because everything aligns so well with the direction embraced by the company itself.

This is the case of the concept you see here and which was published on Twitter by @vastglad.

No live tiles

With a modern look that clearly comes in line with the visual improvements that Microsoft plans for Windows 10 version 1903 (19H1), this Start menu includes many modern elements, such as the recently-announced Microsoft Office icons.

Quick shortcuts to sets are also offered, and so are links to recent apps and recent files. One noticeable change is the lack of live tiles, which Microsoft could very well ditch as well in the coming OS updates.

Rumor has it that Microsoft is working on a more static version of the Start menu, as its data shows that users rarely interact with live tiles, so this concept imagines what a future without them looks like.

Of course, there are things to be improved about this concept, as I think it’s the case of the search bar, which doesn’t make much sense since in the current Start menu you can just type to search without the need for a dedicated box that eats up valuable space.

Also, let’s not forget that creating concepts is much easier than actually implementing such ideas in a complex operating system like Windows 10, but at least Microsoft should check out these designs before deciding the future of key features like the Start menu.
