Fluent UI desktop context menu envisioned in user concept

One of Windows 10’s biggest problems right now concerns the lack of consistency when it comes to the design of the context menus used across the operating system.

With Windows 10 essentially coming as a mix of the traditional desktop experience with a modern side that relies on UWP apps and everything else, Microsoft is still far from creating a consistent approach from one end to another.

And the whole thing becomes very obvious when looking at the smallest things in the OS, such as the context menus. Right-clicking the desktop, for instance, launches a context menu that features a different design from the one that you see when right-clicking the taskbar, and the examples can continue with other menus and apps in Windows 10.

And obviously, the lack of consistency has become one of the most criticized things in Windows 10, with Microsoft surprisingly not in a rush to resolve it.

Fluent context menu

A concept published this weekend on Twitter by @Futur3Sn0w, whose designs are among the best you can find right now in the world of Windows 10, could help solve the whole thing with a very modern approach for the desktop context menu. And this one could very well be used everywhere across the OS.

This envisioned context menu has the full package, including not only modern icons for the listed options (refresh itself is getting an icon too) but also light and dark modes to align with the theme enabled in Windows 10. Furthermore, the spacing in the listed options makes this context menu easy to use with touch input, so Microsoft could also enable it on 2-in-1 devices when the keyboard is disconnected.

Needless to say, you really shouldn’t hold your breath for anything like this to happen anytime soon, although it goes without saying that the lack of design consistency in Windows 10 is something that Microsoft should resolve with the very first occasion.
