Terminator: Genisys” didn’t get off on the right foot from the start. By the time it opened in the US over the 4th of July weekend, it already had a bad rap online, and it ultimately worked against it in the sense that it failed to make as much money as Paramount Pictures expected it to.

International gross wasn’t that spectacular either, so at the end of July, industry analysts were already predicting the worst for the once-beloved franchise: “Genisys,” much like the 2009 “Terminator: Salvation,” would be a one-time shot in the dark, one that would completely misfire.

In other words, it was believed that it wouldn’t make enough money to warrant a sequel, which had been the plan all along.

Variety has good news for those fans who were disappointed to hear a sequel would not be made: “Genisys” opened this weekend in China and box office gross is so good that it will most certainly be made.

Running in 25,000 locations, “Genisys” has become the 4th biggest opening for a US release on the first day, making $27.4 million (€23.6 million). “That pushes its worldwide total to $335.1 million (€289 million), with roughly three quarters of that haul coming from abroad,” the trade publication says.

The film was made on a budget estimated at $155 million (€133.8 million), so this means that Paramount is now considering those sequel plans all over again.
