It’s not a secret that the iPhone is the best-selling smartphone worldwide, but a new set of data provided by Omdia shows that the iPhone 11 has remained the preferred choice even during these difficult times.

The data, which concerns smartphone sales in the first quarter, indicate that worldwide, iPhone 11 was the leading model with no less than 19.5 million sold units. This is a massive improvement from 13.6 million units last year in the same quarter when iPhone XR was the best-selling model.

But in addition, this also shows just how popular the iPhone 11 has become versus any Android phone out there.

Samsung’s Galaxy A51 is said to be the leading choice in the Android world, but it’s far behind the iPhone 11 with just 6.8 million units sold in the first quarter.

Apple dominating smartphone sales

Apple made the top 10 with four different iPhone models, and the same thing for Samsung, only that the South Korean company’s flagship production, the Galaxy S20+ with 5G, is only 9th in the charts with 3.5 million units.

But overall, the Omdia data shows that Apple clearly dominated the smartphone market during these difficult times for the entire industry. The four iPhones in the top 10 generated sales of 32.2 million units, while Samsung’s best smartphones only accounted for 17.6 million units of all mobile devices sold by the company in the first quarter.

For Apple, this is by all means good news. Not only that the company still dominates the smartphone market, but it actually increased its first-quarter market performance substantially despite the health crisis.

The jump from 13.6 million iPhone XR units in Q1 2019 to 19.5 million iPhone 11 units in Q1 2020 is quite significant, and it shows that Apple’s new-generation iPhone is already more successful than its predecessor.
