Change is part of the most recent Windows 11 preview build

Microsoft has just announced that it brought back the drag and drop support to the Windows taskbar, though for the time being, this feature is only available for users in the Windows Insider program.

This is one of the features that have mysteriously disappeared when Microsoft rolled out Windows 11, so the company claims it received the feedback for users and it was pretty clear this feature had to be brought back.

The drag and drop support works exactly as you’d expect it to work. You can simply send files to the apps pinned to the taskbar, so for instance, if you want to create a new attachment for an email, it’s enough to just drag and the drop the file over the Outlook icon.

“Drag and drop is now supported on the Windows 11 taskbar. Quickly drag and drop files between app windows, by hovering over apps in the taskbar to bring their windows to the foreground,” Microsoft explains.

No ETA for production launch just yet

“Try attaching a file to an Outlook e-mail by dragging it and hovering over the Outlook icon in the taskbar to bring the window to the foreground. Once in the foreground, drop your file into the e-mail to attach it. You can also customize your taskbar with your favorite apps from Start’s All apps list by dragging and dropping over the taskbar to pin them. You can also drag and drop to the desktop via “Show desktop” at the very left corner of the taskbar.”

For the time being, there’s no ETA as to when the taskbar could get drag and drop support for all users, but most likely, it’ll be part of a future update that will be released just like the February 2022 pack of improvements for Windows 11.

In other words, we won’t have to wait for a feature update to get drag and drop support on the taskbar, so fingers crossed for the release to take place rather sooner than later.
