Rumor has it the update will be just a minor release

Microsoft’s Windows 10 feature update release calendar includes two different major updates every year, one in the spring and another one in the fall.

While the company has previously included lots of new features in feature updates, this approach changed last year, when the fall update ended up just a minor release with the focus on under-the-hood refinements.

Many described this update as a little bit more than a service pack, and at some level, this is exactly what it was. The November 2019 Update barely included any new features, and now it looks like Microsoft wants to do the same thing this year.

In other words, after the feature-packed Windows 10 May 2020 Update, or version 2004, coming later this month, the fall of 2020 update, possibly called November 2020 Update, will follow in the footsteps of the previous November update.

Long-term Windows 10 approach?

Microsoft watched Mary Jo Foley says the software giant is already considering making the November update just a small update with the focus on polishing the overall experience.

“Officials have not said whether 20H2 will be a minor/cumulative update-type feature update to 20H1 — the way that 1909 was to 1903 — but my contacts said that currently is the team’s intention,” she writes.

While this is very likely to disappoint so many users, the approach overall makes sense for Microsoft. By the looks of things, this could become the Windows 10 feature update concept going forward, with the spring release to be the one bringing new functionality, while the fall one introduces additional refinements to improve the experience with the operating system.

For the time being, however, nothing has been confirmed, so it’s important to take everything with a pinch of salt. Plans can change overnight at any moment and Microsoft wouldn’t say anything about them until the very last moment.
