Space-based strategy with narrative drive

Yksae is under threat, with enemy fleets poised to jump there next turn. But I can now take Spka and threaten the flank of the enemy advance, which will be blunted somewhat by defensive fleets. And another three fleets, currently in repairs, should be ready to join the campaign soon, allowing me to defeat the Hanoar Clique and establish a foothold for humanity.

The Pegasus Expedition is developed by Kalla Gameworks and published by 1C Entertainment. This is a turn-based space strategy title with an interesting premise and some solid mechanics. There’s currently no announced launch window.

The premise is pretty intriguing: humanity has fled the Milky Way and is seeking to re-establish itself in the Pegasus galaxy, where already present powers are not too happy with their effort. The game features a cast of characters that presents different views on the encountered situations, with narrative choices to make.

The mechanics of The Pegasus Expedition will be familiar to fans of the genre. Humanity controls planets, which it can try to develop to deliver resources and build up a capable military. A research system allows players to enhance their capabilities and find ways to make their settlements more prosperous. Gamers can engage in diplomacy with other interstellar powers, who seem a little too receptive to non-aggression pacts.

Fleets will battle for control of star systems, led by admirals, with the player in charge of tactics but with no direct control over the actual tactical engagement. Governors and spies can be hired. All the strategy ideas are present and solid if lacking in significant innovation.

The Pegasus Expedition has a decent if uninspired presentation. It is easy to learn the interface to easily develop planets, move fleets, and more. I like the card-based system that shows off planets and fleets at a glance. The characters that pop up and the overall look of the galaxy can use some improvement. The sound design is pretty standard for a space-based science fiction experience.

Conclusion

The Pegasus Expedition has the core components for a good science-fiction strategy experience: good mechanics and an intriguing premise. It needs some more work in the presentation department and maybe a clearer role for its narrative moments.

Kalla Gameworks seems to have a clear idea of the game that they want to deliver. But before the 1.0 launch, they should try to add at least one big idea designed to make them stand out from similar titles in the genre.
