The debut of Windows 11 should be supported by new PCs

Microsoft launched Windows 11 earlier this month, and the company says the best way to experience the power of the new operating system is to buy a new PC that has been fully developed with this release in mind.

In other words, new hardware optimized for Windows 11 is the best choice in this regard, though according to a report from IDC, the PC market itself is still struggling with component shortage.

The market research firm says the traditional PC market reached 86.7 million units in the third quarter of the year, and while this represents an increase of 3.9 percent from the same quarter a year ago, the tight supply remains a big problem for most companies out there.

“Bottlenecked supply chains and ongoing logistic challenges led the U.S. PC market into its first quarter of annual shipment decline since the beginning of the pandemic,” said Neha Mahajan, senior research analyst, Devices and Displays at IDC.

“After a year of accelerated buying driven by the shift to remote work and learning, there’s also been a comparative slowdown in PC spending and that has caused some softening of the U.S. PC market today. Yet, supply clearly remains behind demand in key segments with inventory still below normal levels.”

Apple still part of the top five

Lenovo remains the number one PC market out there after selling 19.7 million PCs, which means it secured a market share of 22.8 percent, up 3.1 percent from the same quarter a year ago. HP is the runner-up with 17.5 million but down 5.8 percent, while Dell is third with 15.1 million and an increase of no less than 26.6 percent.

Apple continues to be part of the top five thanks to strong Mac sales, with a 9.9 percent recorded in the third quarter pushing its sales to no less than 7.6 million units.
