The warm-up for a pretty stacked month of February

The first month of each year is pretty weak when it comes to new games releases, but 2023 is a bit of an exception. While there are certainly some interesting games coming out next month, January is more of a waiting lobby for February, which is a pretty stacked month with not just many titles scheduled to be released, but also major ones.

Granted, many of the games set for launch in January are, in fact, re-releases, they’re well-worth getting if you didn’t have the chance to play them when they were originally debuted. That said, let’s take a look at some of the most important games expected to arrive throughout the month of January 2023.

The first games of 2023 will drop way after the first week of the month. Scrap Riders is a brand-new PC and Nintendo Switch title, which is scheduled for release on January 9. The indie title is followed one day later by another PC-only game: Path of the Midnight Sun.

Children of Silentown, a dark point & click adventure game published by Daedalic is scheduled for release on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch on January 11. Just one day later, we have three new titles coming out: Lone Ruin (PC, Nintendo Switch), Chasing Static (PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch), and Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider (PC, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch).

One Piece fans will be happy to know that the next game in their favorite franchise, One Piece Odyssey, will land on PC, PlayStation 4/5, and Xbox Series X/S on January 13. The same goes for Dragon Ball Z fans who will be able to pick up Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on the same day. Fans have probably already played Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot when it was originally launched back in 2020, but if you didn’t and you own a current-gen console, we can’t recommend this enough.

UnderDungeon, a humor-packed dungeon crawler with a simplistic black & white art style, is set for release on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch on January 13. We enter into mid-January with an Early Access title, Surviving the Abyss, which is expected to drop on January 17.

Two other games are scheduled for release on the same day: Farlanders (PC) and Re:Call (PC, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch). We have three new games set for launch on January 19, but only one is new: Colossal Cave (PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch) Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden (PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch). It’s not hard to guess which one is new and which are older titles.

One of the biggest releases of January 2023 is Fire Emblem Engage, the Nintendo Switch that fans of the tactical turn-based series are waiting for. The game is coming to Nintendo’s console on January 20, so less than a month from now.

If you don’t own a Nintendo Switch, fret not. Candle Knight, an action adventure with platformer elements is launching on PC on the same day. January 20 is also the day that the Nintendo Switch exclusivity for Monster Hunter Rise ends, so fans of the franchise will be able to pick this one up on PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Another big release of the month is Square Enix’s Forspoken, which will launch on PC and PS5 on January 24. After the mixed reviews the demo received this month, it’s unlikely that the game will get any better, so wait for the reviews before getting this one (unless you liked the demo).

If you’re into deckbuilding and card games, we have a great recommendation for you: Mahokenshi. A turn-based tactics game that uses cards as main pillar for its combat system, this game is slated for release on PC on January 24.

Risen, one of the greatest RPG of all time is getting ported on consoles. Don’t expect any visual improvements in this release, but at least you can play it on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch on January 24.

As we’re entering the last week of the month, we have a few more major releases to talk to you about. The first one would be the Dead Space Remake, which is coming to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on January 27.

But before that, we have a smaller title – OddBallers, which is set to arrive on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch on January 26, followed by Atone: Heart of the Elder Tree (PC, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch), a hand-drawn adventure puzzler that blends interactive storytelling and rhythm combat system.

The last day of January is really packed with new games of various genres. THQ Nordic continues to pump out games based on beloved cartoons, so expect SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake to launch on PC, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch on January 31.

We Were Here Forever, the most recent installment in one of the few franchises dedicated to co-op players, is finally coming to consoles. After receiving raving reviews on PC earlier this year, We Were Here Forever is launching on PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on January 31.

Inkulinati, an ink-based turn-based strategy game “straight from medieval manuscripts” will be making its Early Access on PC and Xbox on January 31. If you love turn-based strategy games, we can’t recommend this enough. Also, play the demo on Steam if you’re not sure you’ll like it.

We’re still not over with January, but there aren’t too many new games left to talk about. Season: A Letter to the Future, a third-person atmospheric adventure bicycle road trip game in the veins of Firewatch and The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, is slated for release on PC, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on January 31.

Last but not least, Superfuse, an action RPG that can be played solo or with up to 4 friends in co-op, is scheduled to enter Steam Early Access on the last day of January.
