It's probably easier to make a card game than an RPG, but it's definitely harder to make a deck-building RPG. However, it looks like one-man developer Nerdook, the man behind Monster Slayers, managed to do that. The Magister is a new deck-building murder-mystery RPG that will be launched on PC in Q3/Q4 2020.

More importantly, indie publisher Digerati announced that an open beta will be available on PC between August 13 and August 26, so if you're not convinced that The Magister suits your tastes, it might be a good idea to give it a try.

We're not sure how much content will be included in the beta, but if you don't want to be story-spoiled, you'll probably want to wait for the final release. Still, it's worth mentioning that The Magister promises infinite replayability, so even if you're spoiled to some elements, there will probably a lot of content left to explore for when the game launches later this year.

In The Magister, players take the role of an agent assigned to enforce the will of the Emperor and the rule of law in some of the Empire's provinces. You will be dispatched to the remote rural village of Silverhurst to investigate the grim demise of a fellow Magister. The catch is that you only have 14 days to solve the case.

The Magister supposedly features an innovative card-based encounters system where you can fight with weapons and magic or settle disputes peacefully using so-called Tactical Diplomacy. Also, the game features uniquely generated events and offers multiple ways to solve problems, as well as different Magister types to choose from.

Obviously, there will be a wide variety of starting decks to master and additional cards to acquire, so every investigation will offer a new experience. Those interested can apply for the beta via the game's website and wishlist The Magister on Steam right now.
