14 DAY TRIAL // The clock is ticking on Windows 10 Mobile support, and while Microsoft is getting ready to finally leave its mobile platform behind, there are many diehard users out there that just don’t want to see this product go.
Needless to say, there won’t be much to do on a Windows phone once the support is coming to an end and the app store is closed, so making the switch to Android or iOS, a move that Microsoft itself suggested, appears to be the only option available for everyone.
However, with the platform going dark anyway, more and more developers who previously coded for Windows Phone and Windows 10 Mobile decided to open source their apps, giving the fanboys another chance to continue using their device by sideloading these apps.
As MSPU reports, the number of developers who commit to this approach keeps growing, and more are expected to do the same soon and open-source their old apps for Windows Phone and Windows 10 Mobile.
Windows 10 Mobile set to get the ax in December
The source code for these apps is most often posted on GitHub.
Pedro Lamas, a software developer who built apps for both Windows Phone 7.x and Windows Phone 8.x, warns that while the apps are now available under a MIT license, they might not work exactly as expected.
“As Windows Phone has been dead and buried for a while now, last weekend I uploaded all assets and source-code for my old Windows Phone 7.x and 8.x apps to GitHub, some of them never before published!” he says.
The latest updates for Windows 10 Mobile will be published on December 10 as part of the last Patch Tuesday cycle of the year, and after that, the mobile platform will be officially unsupported, with no other updates to be released beyond this date.
