Officially unveiled last year, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is launching earlier than we have expected. In between so many delays, Deadalic Entertainment and NACON managed to keep the development of their Lord of the Rings game on track for a 2022 release.

In a joint statement, the companies confirmed The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is set for release on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC on September 1. Additionally, the game will launch for Nintendo Switch sometime later this year.

Based on the popular The Lord of the Rings trilogy of books by J.R.R. Tolkien, as the name suggests, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum focuses on the adventures of the mysterious character and tries to tell the creature’s experiences from behind-the-scenes in the first chapters of The Fellowship of the Ring.

The game starts immediately after Gollum loses his precious ring to Bilbo Baggins, as he decides to leave the Misty Mountains and embark on a perilous journey that leads him from the dungeons of Barad-dûr to the realm of the Wood-elves in Mirkwood.

Gollum is not a soldier, so in order to survive the dangers of his journey through Middle-earth, he has to sneak and climb and use all his cunning. He also has to deal with his Hobbit-self - Sméagol. It’s up to the players if they want Gollum to have the upper hand when it comes to making important decisions, or if they prefer to allow Sméagol to take over. Gollum also encounters well-known characters from the books as well as a few new faces.

Although the game has multiple endings (two), the outcome is more or less the same in order to fall in line with the source material. Along with the digital version of the game, NACON will also release a physical version for those who love to collect their favorite franchises.
