Firefox now looking more like Firefox on Android

If you’re a long time Android and Firefox user, one of the things that you probably noticed is that in some weird cases, the Google Chrome icon shows up when trying to open links in the browser.

More specifically, here’s when the whole thing happens.

If you search for something on Google using your Android device and then the tapped result tries to open a specific app, you are provided with a list of apps that can handle the request.

Reddit is pretty much the best example in this regard. If you tap a reddit link on the Google results page, you get a list of apps, like Reddit, as well as a “Continue” option that allows you to view the page in whatever browser you’re using.

But until today, that browser, which for Mozilla users was obviously Firefox, came with the Google Chrome icon, including on reddit. And for many, this is quite a blasphemy, as having the Google Chrome icon for Mozilla Firefox doesn’t make any sense.

Goodbye, Chrome icon!

More recently, however, this has changed on Android, again with reddit as the best example. Now when you are provided with same options, the Firefox “continue” entry comes with its very own icon, and the Google Chrome logo is nowhere to be seen.

This isn’t necessarily something that’s only specific to Android.

On iPhone, for example, the Google Chrome icon also shows up for the “browser” option when trying to open links, regardless of the browser you are using. This is because reddit is the one making the request, so no matter the browser, it uses the Chrome icon as a generic browser icon.

In the screenshot that I took on the iPhone, I was using Safari to search for reddit pages, but again, the Chrome icon is used for the browser option.
