14 DAY TRIAL // Announced at the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase, The Last Case of Benedict Fox is a weird mix of adventure, action and metroidvania elements. Developed by Polish indie studio Plot Twist, the game promises to offer player a handcrafted metroidvania experience sprinkled with Lovecraftian horror.
The main twist of the game is the fact that the protagonist, Benedict Fox, is bound to a demon. Having such a unique companion offers some nifty benefits, including the ability to explore the minds of the recently deceased as a last chance to get a “testimony.”
Throughout the game, Benedict and his companion will fight demons, solve intricate puzzles and explore surreal maze-like locations, while uncovering a twisted plot that involves secret organizations, forbidden rituals, and ruthless assassins.
While exploring the minds of recently deceased, so-called Limbos, the person’s memories, emotions, and traumas take on physical forms, which more often than not want to harm Benedict. Thankfully, his companion not only allows him to explore these locations, but the demon is also a great asset in combat.
That said, players can mix the demon’s powers with firearms and creative use of their surroundings to overcome the enemies. It’s an interesting twist to the standard metroidvania formula, one which also offers a unique take on combat.
It’s also worth mentioning that The Last Case of Benedict Fox is heavily inspired by Lovecraft’s nightmares, noir pulp fiction, and early 20th-century jazz music, a weird combination that will probably work just because.
No release date has been revealed during the announcement, but it looks like that game won’t be out until Spring 2023. Also, there’s no mention of any other platform except PC, so we must assume this is where the game will land first.
